As COVID-19 restrictions ease up around the country, the kids are out of school and summertime is here!
There is a pent-up demand to travel caused by last year’s restrictions. This means that many people are planning to get away.
With many people still unsure about plane travel, many international destinations not being an option, and the current rental car shortage causing problems around the country, the great American Roadtrip is a very popular choice for summer vacation this year!
The American Hotel & Lodging Association found that 72% of people who are planning a trip will take an overnight vacation via car in the next five months. 75% of these trips are expected to be a drive of two hours or more.
Then the question is, does your car insurance cover your road trip?
Your car insurance would not cover the trip itself. However, depending on your policy, it can cover things like trip cancellation, trip interruption, or medical emergency travel. Or, you can purchase road trip insurance as an add-on if you don’t already have these protections.
Auto insurance also generally maintains normal coverage across state lines (sometimes Mexico and Canada).
If you plan on sharing the drive with someone else, make sure that they also have insurance. Both the driver and the car should have insurance!
Once this is done, it’s also a good idea to make sure your car is road trip ready! Here are some recommended steps to prepare your car for a long drive.

On a closing note, when taking a long trip, it never hurts to double check your policy and coverage.
Having things like roadside assistance, comprehensive coverage, and uninsured motorist property damage coverage are all excellent ways to make sure you are protected against any unexpected situation that might happen.
